Sheep to Shawl Project at Friendship Village School

The Sheep to Shawl project was proposed by a local artist, Katharine Cobey, and Wayne and JoAnne Meyers who own Beau Chemin Farm.  We were lucky to have George Hoyt's help with photographing the project.  The fifth and sixth grade students visited Katharine's studio and the farm.  We learned about farming, lambing, and shearing.  Then we visited New Aim Farm to learn about the fiber mill there, and we tried spinning with Navajo spindles and louet wheels.  Students learned how to knit, and they are working on projects like helmet liner hats for soldiers in Iraq.  The project planners hope the children gained an appreciation of and enjoyment for the time and skill it takes to raise animals and crops and to make things by hand.
